Global Tampa Bay Launches Trade Mission to Mexico

February 2025 Trade Mission Successfully Helps Local Companies Expand to New Markets

Global Tampa Bay successfully led a trade mission to Mexico City, Mexico, from February 24 to 27, 2025 to assist local businesses in expanding to new markets and promote the region for foreign direct investment while also celebrating Tampa International Airport and Aeromexico’s newest nonstop service between Tampa Bay and Mexico City. Representatives from Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas counties, Tampa International Airport, Port Tampa Bay, Delta Airlines, and local business owners participated to expand their presence in the Latin American market.

Florida is the sixth-largest exporter in the U.S., with Mexico being its third-largest trading partner. Florida companies export over $4 billion in goods and services to Mexico annually. As the second-largest economy in Latin America, Mexico plays a pivotal role, with Florida serving as the gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean.

Dr. Cynthia Johnson is the Director of the Pinellas County Economic Development Council and Chair of Global Tampa Bay stated, “The successful conclusion of this trade mission and the establishment of a new nonstop service between Tampa Bay and Mexico City mark a significant advancement in our efforts to strengthen international collaboration. These initiatives serve as a testament to our region’s strategic vision and its role as a nexus of global commerce and innovation. We remain steadfast in our commitment to fostering enduring partnerships that drive economic progress and mutual prosperity.”

One-on-one business development meetings were arranged for all participants. Shane Lawler, Executive Vice President of sales and marketing for Progen Industries, LLC, a provider of energy solutions, emphasized the importance of these missions for Progen’s business expansion. Lawler stated, “Attending the Global Tampa Bay Trade Mission in Mexico City has been an invaluable experience. The opportunity to connect with key business leaders and explore new market opportunities has opened doors for future collaboration and growth. Mexico’s dynamic economy and the strength of the trade ties between our regions offer tremendous potential, and I am excited to be part of this ongoing relationship. I look forward to continuing these discussions and driving innovation together in the months ahead.”

The Tampa Bay delegation attended a SelectUSA Investment Summit while in Mexico City. The event was structured to attract Foreign Direct Investment and trade mission delegates looked to establish new connections with Mexican companies interested in investing in Tampa Bay.
